Motorola has come up with their new smartphone model, the Motorola CLIQ which is powered by the Google Android mobile operating system. This smartphone is solid and attractive, with a strong focus on social networking tools such as Facebook and Twitter. With a big, 3.1-inch screen, a rectangular design (with curved edges) and a slide-away QWERTY keyboard, the CLIQ sits firmly between the clunky G1 and the flashy MyTouch.

The CLIQ’s home screen is divided into three main areas. One shows the latest social news from any of many networks –- Facebook status updates, Twitter tweet, Flickr photos and so on. The second pulls together all the messages directly to you, whether by e-mail, text message or over a social network. By tapping on the icons, one can scroll through older messages and updates. There is a third region that lets you update our status on any or all of your social networks.

A modern smartphone is a tool that interacts with the world. It lets you communicate with people, gather information, navigate streets, and so on. An Internet service that keeps track of how you relate to people and information can make this tool far more powerful. Motorola CLIQ fulfils both these needs and hence this is potentially a new force to reckon with in the mobile world.

A lot of people said that the N85 is a replacement to the N82, which is one of the best mobile devices that Nokia has produced. However, they are both targeted at different markets and the N82 is still on sale and not discontinued by Nokia.

Sporting the same form factor as the N96, the N85 is a dual slider device too. Running on Symbian S60, the N85 has a very minimalist design. I liked the call and end call buttons design very much. Sliding the phone up will reveal the number pad. Although there are no seams between the keys, it is still very much usable. Slide the phone down and the screen will automatically switch landscape mode and you will find four extra buttons. These four extra buttons are music control buttons but when you play a game, the button will turn into two gaming buttons.

The Carl Zeiss, 5.0 megapixel camera sits at the back of the device. There is a dedicated button on the side of the phone and you’ll need to slide the lens cover open. I liked this design as it will protect the camera lens. However, the N85 still uses LED lights as flash instead of Xenon flash like the N82. This is a huge turn off for those who plan to upgrade their N85.

The overall operation of the phone is fast and there were no lags encountered during our course of usage but then again, the device is brand new and there weren’t many application installed on it.

I’m still bugged by the fact that N85 doesn’t use Xenon flash as the camera’s flash. The implementation of Xenon on the N82 was a very welcomed feature. The N85 performs just as good as the N96. So if you don’t need the extra bells and whistles on the N96, the N85 is the one you need.

I had the HTC Touch VIVA previously and I’m pretty impressed at what it could do. However, there is something missing from the VIVA – 3G connection. However, do not be disappointed as HTC heard your pleas and launched the HTC Touch 3G last month. To the untrained eye, the HTC Touch 3G looks exactly the same as the HTC Touch VIVA but upon closer inspection, instead of the plastic shimmering material used on the Touch VIVA, the Touch 3G has a rubberized enclosure, giving a better and firmer grip to the device.

The design of the device is simple. There are only two buttons and a five way directional button located below the 2.8 inch QVGA screen. Like what I have said before, I liked the simplistic design as it is easier on the eyes as well as on the fingers.

Like all recent HTC devices, the Touch 3G is installed with its TouchFLO interface on top of Windows Mobile 6.1 professional. The TouchFLO interface gone through generations of improvements and the one installed on the Touch 3G is as smooth as hot knife through butter.

Equipped with a same sized screen as the Touch VIVA, the Touch 3G is a little beefier in term of specifications. It uses a Qualcomm MSM7225 processor clocked at 528MHz, a slightly better 3.2 megapixel camera and a tad more RAM than its sibling.

However, the most significant feature is its 3G connection. The 3G connectivity is mainly for data connections instead of 3G video calls. Reception on the Touch 3G was fairly good as compared to the other 3G phones in our pocket. I didn’t encounter sudden disconnection when I’m on 3G, which could only mean one thing, the connectivity between the Touch 3G and the telco is reliable.

If there was one thing I did not like about the Touch 3G, it has to be its small virtual QWERTY keypad. I found it difficult to type a message using my fingers. I had to whip the stylus out from its silo for the feat.

The Touch 3G is a great for those who liked the Touch VIVA but missed the 3G connectivity that they were longing for. With a more powerful processor and more RAM, the Touch 3G is a great device to replace your aging HTC Touch, or even the Touch Dual. Great device nevertheless.

The Sony-Ericsson Xperia X1 has been creating hype in the industry for quite some time now. Being Sony-Ericsson’s first Windows Mobile phone, the X1 needs a little more than luck to compete in this ultra competitive market.

This review unit is solid black in color and Sony-Ericsson offers a silver version as well. Unlike mobile devices these days, the X1 is heavy, weighing at 158 grams. This is mainly because of its steel construction, which is evident as even the battery cover is made out of metal. The hefty weight didn’t put me down. In fact, I prefer that it weighs this much because it gives me a better grip as well as feeling that it is sturdily built.

The competitive advantage of the X1 is its Arc slider design, where the screen slides upwards, revealing the QWERT keypad and angling the screen for a better view point, as well as the Xperia Panel Interface, simply called the X Panel.

The X Panel has a dedicated button below the screen. When the button is pressed, the X1 brings up a grid like interface where the “panels” are displayed. More panels can be downloaded from Sony Ericsson’s website, giving its user freedom in what they want in their phone.
There is a 3.2 megapixel camera at the back of the X1 with a single white LED to serve as flash light. The camera performed rather well and color representation was good even with flash on.

The QWERTY keypad is great as the key are quite far apart and tactical feedback is good. However, it’s a bit “flat” which mean your thumbs will have hard time “feelings” the keys.

Powered by a Qualcomm MSM7200A processor clocked at 528MHz, 512MB RAM and 256MB ROM. The device performed really fast and is one of the fastest Windows Mobile devices in the market.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 is one of the fastest Windows Mobile devices I’ve used and it certainly didn’t disappoint me. The QWERTY keypad is a little flat and with a price tag of US$650, it will break the bank for some of us.
