No, this is not a science fiction dream. The technology that allows you pay for products just by waving your cellphone over a reader does exist. People in Japan and South Korea have been using it for the last several years to pay for everything from train tickets to groceries to candy in vending machines, simply by waving their phones over a contactless reader. It is currently undergoing small-scale trials around the world, including in Atlanta, New York and the San Francisco Bay Area and from the feedback received, nearly everyone has liked using this form of payment.

However, most consumers in the United States will not be able to wave and pay with their cellphones anytime soon, the reason being that the number of companies which must work together to give the technology to the masses have yet to agree on how to split the resulting revenue. In Japan, this was not a problem because a single carrier, NTT DoCoMo, accounted for more than half the Japanese market at the time the system was rolled out and thus had significant leverage with financial institutions and handset manufacturers.

This is not the case in the United States. For such payments to work there, various companies such as cellphone manufacturers, carriers, financial institutions and retailers must all play their roles. There also must be some sort of intermediary that is trusted by both the financial institutions and the carriers to activate the virtual credit cards inside the phone. One problem is that anyone using a credit card inside a cellphone is simultaneously a customer of the financial institution and of the carrier.

Samsung has released the first mobile phone with an eight-megapixel image sensor that can produce quality images on a par with most digital cameras. Called the Samsung i8510, the new model comes with a flash and can detect when people are smiling in the picture. This may be the first product to go on sale in Britain with an eight-megapixel camera, but other manufacturers such as Sony Ericsson are developing similar products for release. Previous camera phones have been criticized for its poor image quality. However, one expert said that the emergence of this Korean company’s new phone model could mean that the average consumer no longer need to buy a camera.

The Samsung phone, available for free with a contract to Carphone Warehouse, also has a built-in satnav and 8GB of storage space for music and high-speed wireless Internet access. Its design comes with a slick slider, and the handset feels solid and well built. The menu system is easy to use. Taking pictures is fast and the camera seems to face a series of conditions. The image quality was very impressive – the best yet in a mobile phone. The color is rich and well-defined and automatic adjustments worked well for most conditions. The flash will be a good complement for late-night bar shooting.

Overall, Samsung i8510 is a great combination of almost all the features that you could want in a cellphone.

The Korea Times report that the mobile Internet is the hottest issue among early adopters of technology in Korea. The three most popular handsets these days according to a local technology website are all touch-screen phones specializing in Web browsing ― Samsung’s Haptic, Pantech & Curitel’s CanU and LG’s Touch Web Phone. The above picture features a user searching for video clips on YouTube utilising a Samsung Haptic phone with a pencil tip.

These so-called full-browsing phones are selling at impressive rates. Samsung says that it has sold around 30,000 Haptic phones in 15 days since its launch on March 25, which is about the double the daily sales of other new models. Its hefty price tag ― 797,000 won ($800) without a rebate or a discount ― hasn’t been discouraging customers, the company says.

So when can we expect these mobile phones to catch on in our local market?
